Project Runway Oz prize update

Well, as I’m sure you could tell, I was very excited on Friday. I had won myself a dress by This is Genevieve that would be fitted to me. I was contacted by Project Runway Oz the next day (I always like a prompt response) and they grabbed my sizing details off me (Australian size 18* (or there about) and passed them onto the PR company representing the designer, called (delightfully) Sweaty Betty.

Unfortunately, they got back to me almost immediately telling me that This is Genevieve designs are only made up to a size 12. Ah. Well, that isn’t really going to work for me.

Start rant now.

Why is it that designers don’t make clothes in sizes people wear? I mean, size 12 is on the small size. I haven’t been a size 12 since University. Why can’t designers offer at least a 16? Miss Plumcake says it best in the New York Magazine.
“I’ll say there are more options now than there used to be, but that’s sort of like saying ‘he doesn’t hit me nearly as often as he used to. [...] I’m fat, I have money. I’m more than willing to give it in quantity to the store who will supply me with beautifully made clothes that don’t make me look like a hooker, a tranny, or someone’s bingo-playing grandma from Duluth.”
Right, finished that; back to the story.

Caz from Sweaty Betty asked me nicely what I might like to do instead, so I suggested that as Genevieve Er also designs jewellery, that might be substituted. They were happy with this suggestion, and in a few months I’ll be getting this rather lovely silver rose cocktail ring (it’s still in production in Bali).

So anyway, the whole adventure was a mostly pleasant experience and I’d like to thank Gina from Robot Meets Alien and Caz from Sweaty Betty for their help.

* An Australian size 18 is a US size 14, UK 16, French 44, German 42, Italian 48, and Japanese 17. Err, world, could we just agree on one standard? It would make things sooo much easier. See OnlineConversion.com for more.

I love that you posted this and I am very glad that the experience was good. I agree with the sizing - size 12 is a very small size to have as the biggest size and I think people like you help push the boundaries - maybe in the next collection there will be bigger sizes thanks to you!

I hope you enjoy the beautiful jewelry!

Cheers,
Gina

I have been following this search on twitter and have been worried about the sizing but as it has been described as made to measure I assumed it would include at least size 14.

For a designer to only make their garments up to a size 12 is a shame because they are missing out on a large part of the market.

There are many size 14+ women who wear designer threads every day. There are also many size 14 women who are not overweight.

This designer should seriously consider catering for size 14 in all their garments.

Hey Gina, thanks for visiting ^_^. If there are larger sizes in the next collection, I'll be sure to check them out, I really like Genevieve's work.

Hey Anon, I agree that all designers should have sizes larger than a 12. So many women, young middle and old, are larger than a 12. Many designers (and I'm being general here, not specific) say that it isn't profitable for them, but I do wonder how many have the research to back such claims up. Personally, I'm happy to spend money on clothes that fit and flatter me, what ever their size.

Hey Icy,
What a win! I never win anything.

I'm glad it's worked out well. Can't wait to see the ring on you. x

Grrrr, this makes me sooo angry, I think you have been very restrained in your rant! This is the whole reason I have decided to take a day off per seek doing a pattern drafting course so I can make my own cloths that fit, to my own measurements. There is absolutely excuse for this prize to not be able to be in what ever size. I'm glad you will be happy with the ring instead, but I hope you don't mind if I sit at my desk and fume for the rest of the day on your behalf!

Hey Likkle Girl, I don't win anything either, so I'm glad to have won something (I think the last thing I won was a t-towel).

Hey Louise, I make some of my own clothes too so I can get something unusual and that fits perfectly (the time it takes is my real problem).

My only real complaint was they should have stated up front what sizes the dress was available in. I did notice that for subsequent dress give-aways they have been putting the sizes. As they've offered me a peice of jewellery of (presumably) equal value, I have to say I have no complaints.

But feel free to fume Louise ^_^

Oh no! How frustrating. At least you got a lovely ring, though! :)

Hey Leia, it was a bit frustrating, but I am happy with the ring (or will be when I get it).
