Harem pants, perhaps they can work after all

Harem pants @ Individual ChicWhat is it with the trend for harem pants at the moment? Of all the styles possible for a pair of pants, the harem works for so few people. You can only really pull it off with the right body shape. For me, this means someone who is not too tall, someone with curves, where the hips are the same dimension as the bust, and a reasonable waist; a perfect figure eight. Not many people can pull that off.

On the other hand, it can be a look that works. I saw a girl in the city just the other day sporting a pair of black harem pants, and I was astonished at how good she looked in them. She had just a simple and plain black t-shirt on with them and black ballet flats and on the whole it was a look that worked; unfussy and simple.
Harem pants @ Individual ChicAnother girl in Newtown had another pair that really worked for her; they were more of a kung-fu pant with ballet flats again, and it was an effective look.

And finally E from The Shoe of Salvation has a great picture of her wearing the Sussan harem pants and she really, really pulls it off. Very cool!

So, why not try a pair of harem pants, especially if you wait a month or two, when they’re bound to be on sale. But from looking around, only wear them with ballet flats if you want the look to work. I thought I'd never say it, but I'll have to try on a pair and see how they look.

Important Note: don't wear dropped crotch harem pants, especially with black socks and black crocs. This message goes out to the other girl I saw in Newtown. I'm just saying.

Thanks, Icy!

The harem pants I have on are not really the same as the ones in the Sussan photo, I think.

Mine are cut like a normal pair of pants, in cotton poplin, and they fasten with a button and zip like regular pants, too. The only difference is that there is a finger-width's elastic banding at the hem at the pants.

This was the only reason why I even thought I could wear them! Also the fact that they were on the sale rack, for $17.

Pants of that design sound so much more sensible. I could possibly pull of a design along those lines. I did try on the ones in Sussan. The results were ... embarassing.

I remember wearing harem pants when I was a senior in high school - and they were very flattering. Of course, I wore a size 3 then. It's the fear of mockery that has kept me from considering trying them again now, but perhaps I should. Be daring and adventurous (I tell myself). ;)

Hey Rebecca, I think you should try them (assuming you can get a cheap pair). This kind of trend is not worth spending money on, but it could be fun to see if you can get a pair that fits.
