I saw a lady walking to the train today wearing a lovely little black dress, well fitted, good length with 2 cm spaghetti straps. She looked good, the dress looked good and I was suitably impressed, until she turned around.
It was her bra, I could see her dingy white bra straps at the back of her dress. Such a shame! If they’d been black straps, or even nude, it would have been OK, but not dingy white ones. It just pulled down the whole level of the dress. Such a shame.

I just don't get it! If she didn't have the proper bra, she should have worn something else or bought whatever she needed to wear the dress. Strapless bras aren't exactly hard to find.
And if she's too big up top to wear a strapless bra, then she should either A. wear a different dress, B. wear something over the dress, or C. have thicker straps sewn on the dress.
Personally, I think white bras should be illegal except for brides -- and even then, only the ones going for that extra virginal wedding night look. In that case, they also better be plenty lacy to make up for the color.
Icy,
A cold-hard intervention might have been appropriate. That sounds like a very sad white bra.
It is such a mistake to think only what shows matters. Not to say that isn’t a mistake I have made--in the past ;-)
Meg, I agree, and she wasn't too big to wear a strapless bra. Admittedly you could only see the straps from the back, not the front, but they were such dingy straps...
La Belette, it is a mistake that what shows is the only thing that matters. How can you feel fabulous with dingy underwear? You need glamorous (but comfy) undergarments.
