Do you have a piece of clothing so unique and wonderful you can’t live without it? I’m not talking about your favourite comfy t-shirt here, I’m talking about that wonderful piece of clothing that you own that you’d pay good money to a tailor to have re-create when it wears out.
I do. The jacket, by Cue, I bought seven or eight years ago and it was one of those things I had to buy.
I was shopping in Myer in Chatswood and was wandering around the ladies wear section, not really out for anything specific, just cruising, when I saw it ... the most beautiful jacket. It was black (of course) cropped at the hips, double breasted under the bust with an open neck, a tall collar, large lapels and French cuffed sleaves.
I gasped when I saw it, I truly did; tears may have even come to my eyes. I sidled up to it and grabbed the price tag to take a look (because I always do this, it’s just sensible) and gasped again, this time in horror; it was AU$300 (that was a lot of money to me then, even now it’s not chump change). I stroked the sleave for a bit and then walked away …
… for about 3 steps, then turned and lunged back, and grabbed a few sizes off the rack. I told myself in my head “I’ll just try it on, just to see how it looks, I’m sure it won’t be anything special”. I was lying to myself, by the way, I knew it would look fabulous.
In the change rooms I gasped again, not only was the jacket perfect, it looked perfect on me too, and it made me look fabulous. The double breast combined with the open neck emphasised my collarbones and de-emphasised my waist. The length, finishing just at the top of the hips was super flattering, and the cuffed sleeves balanced my slightly bulky upper arms. A size smaller than what I normally wore was perfect. A that point, there was no going back. I was having that jacket.
My heart fluttered as I handed over the card as I bought it but I knew it was the right decision. I subsequently wore it at least two days a week for the next four years. Then I tried to iron it when it was wet and made the collar go shiny. And you know what; I couldn’t stop wearing it even then. Conservatively, I’ve worn that jacket at least 800 times.
It’s not a great photo, but you can see it in my post back in March. It was, and still is, the most perfect jacket in the world.
Do you have a perfect piece of clothing like mine? Tell me all about it.

My favorite piece of clothing right now is this skirt- http://fashionmash.com/outfit/14/
I think it would be really fun if you shared some of your clothes & outfits on my Fashion Mash site and then linked to them in your blog for your readers to see.
I know I would love to see your clothes!
My favourite right now is my 2007 winter coat purchase.
For years I've had a purple tweed coat at the top of my wish list. I've imagined it in detail: it would be great quality (I subscribe to the cost per wear theory with coats & jackets) and the 'right' shade of purple; it would be a fitted, belted style; it would have some flair via an interesting detail or two. I even imagined the accessories I'd wear with it (mulberry leather gloves and long varigated knit scarf in shades of pink and purple).
Well it's my usual experience that concocting a clothing fantasy this specific virtually guarantees disapointment ... but guess what?
I found the lot! ON SALE!! OK the coat was just over $300 (yep, on sale) so I had to take a deep breath. I'm hoping to get many years of wear out of this ensemble, but I just love it and feel like a film star when I'm styled up.
Next on my list would have to be those trousers that fit 'just right'; hard to find, but so satisfying when you do :)
Right now..?
It'd be my Jacob Denim tailored/strutured jacket.
I bought it in a size 5, but it felt tight on my body.. however it was the ONLY ONE LEFT.. so since it still fit (kind of), I bought it and I've never regretted it since because I've actually lost weight and enjoy having it feel fitted to my body instead of loose...
This jacket has been worn at least 500 times, and was well worth the $100 price tag I was balking over.
My first pair of fluevog boots! I bought them last year, and I wear them all the time. (I've worn the heels out already, so they're due for a repair)

The most money I've ever spent on something that wasn't camera gear, but they're worth it.
My favs are usually jeans. As long as they fit well and hug the right parts, I'm happy.
I am starting a new blog, BookWise and Loving It. I hope you'll check it out.
Oooooooh, there are too many things to mention.
My hats for starters: http://www.allaboutappearances.info/its-a-say-something-hat-day/
Then there's the peep-toe herring bone stilettos, the 4" black patent heels with cork heels and platform, my white Mary Jane ballet flats, my new purple patent clutch, my white enamel butterfly necklace with clear beads, my white cotton jacket with just the right amount of fringe, my turquoise bead cuff bracelet....
I just realized something. I love my wardrobe. Well, my accessories at least. One of these days I really need to get some clothes to go with them.
Lurvely skirt MazaMashii. I'm not getting the chance to take many outfit photos at the moment, and my growing belly is limiting my options. I'll see in a few months ^_^
Red, what a seriously fabulous sounding coat! Not sure where you're from, but were standing on the corner of King and Castlereagh in Sydney this morning at about 8:15. I saw a woman in a stunning purple coat and red shoes and it could have been you ^_^
FabBroke, that's just the kind of thing I'm talking about. Great buy!
Jen, oh you have Fleuvog shoes! You're soooo lucky! I want these ones http://individualchic.blogspot.com/2007/05/must-have-shoes.html.
Amisare, jeans seem to be everyone's favourites! I didn't know you were based in Afganistan! Tell us about what that's like.
Meg, you do have lots of great accessories ^_^ (and I've seen your hats). But which one is your favourite?
Wow. I'm in Afghanistan?! I think I'll go check my blog settings. Sorry.
Thanks for the heads up. I fixed it and am now back in the U.S., according to my blog anyway.
Amisare, oh, now I'm kind of disapointed. I was looking forward to some really interesting stories about Afganistani fashion ^_^
Hi Icy, although I'm in Sydney it wasn't me on the corner of King and Castlereagh. However, I bought THE coat from Jigsaw at Castlereagh and Market, so the red-shoe lady could have scored herself one too ... I like the sound of the red shoes, must try that combo myself :)
Hey Red, it was a very effective look ^_^
Oh wow, that DOES sound like a good jacket. i think my ultimate piece of clothing would have to be my pilgrim brown houndstooth coat. It really made me enjoy last winter in a way that previous coats haven't, because it's actually adequately warm and stylish!
Hey Gauri, long time no hear. That does sound like a wonderful coat, I just can't resist a great coat, I think they make an outfit. Don't you?
