Individual Chic: The Tim-Tam, an Australian institution

The Tim-Tam, an Australian institution

This is in no way fashion related, but I’m Australian and I’d like to share a little of our fascinating culture with you.

The Tim-Tam is a chocolate biscuit famous in Australia; it could be called one of our national foods. Think of two rectangular chocolate biscuits, sandwiched together with a chocolate cream and then covered in a chocolate shell and you’ve got it.

They were first sold in 1964 by the Arnott’s company and they still sell 35 million packs a year. According to Wikipedia, that’s 1.5 packs per Australian per year (someone else must be eating my share).

I was first introduced to the Tim-Tam Slam in college. This involves biting the opposite corners off a Tim-Tam and then using it like a straw to suck coffee, hot chocolate or Milo*, making sure to eat it, just before it dissolves into a sticky mess in your fingers.

My personal favourite way of having them is to stick them in the freezer for an hour or so before eating. Mmmm.

On the other hand, if you offered me some Cadbury’s chocolate or a Tim-Tam, I’d take the chocolate every time.

* Milo is another Australian classic that I’ll go into another time.

Sounds delicious.. I've never heard of drinking Milo with a chocolate/wafer straw (I think I'd be prone to dipping it into the drink instead) but it's something to try, if I ever visit!

FB: "This lady, Individual Chic, told me to try TimTams with Milo...." :P

Funny, though, how once you leave Australia (I spent a year at Uni there and haven't been back), the Tim Tams are the first thing you miss.
I'm still cringing at my vegemite memory though.

Tanya, thanks for stopping by! I'm an Aussie born and bread (heh) and I don't like veggimite much either.
