APEC Excitement

The 2007 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders weeks is being held in our lovely Sydney this week (though we’re not putting on the best weather). The leaders of all of the nations surrounding the Pacific Ocean are visiting our fair city, including the leaders of China and the US. This involves a massive security lockdown that is really quite entertaining.

The security fences from Circular Quay Railway Station

We’re right in the “declared” zone and we’re surrounded by fences. There are police at the gates and you can be required to show ID to get through. Yesterday, one of our lawyers was stopped because she wasn’t carrying the right sort of ID. She had a 2km trek to find a gate where she could get through.

The security fences, with Bush's hotel in the background.

The building where I work is right next door to the hotel that US President Bush is staying in. They have snipers on the roof and there are permanent TV cameras set up at the base of our building watching the front door for anyone interesting. In-fact one of the women who works here was waved at by Dubya as he zoomed past in his motorcade.

Snipers on the roof of the hotel.

Now there have been no real protests to this point so some of the security seems over the top at this point. The news papers and TV seem disappointed they can’t wring more of a story out of the whole thing, but the weekend may bring changes.

Helicopter over the Opera House where the leaders will meet (and do you envy me my view)

The one good thing with all of this is we get an extra public holiday tomorrow when the leaders actually meet. Yay! As such, there’s a good chance there’ll be no post tomorrow, so have a good weekend.

I'm so glad APEC is over with! Though it would've been quite exciting for you, considering you work so close!
And yes, I'm very jealous of your views!

Hey Karina, it was exciting. We could see the snipers! It wasn't too inconvinent though. Getting too and from work is fine as I catch the train anyway. And the view, just lucky ^_^. That's not from an office either (the only person with an office is our CEO), everyone has that view. I work for a good company ^_^
