Individual Chic: What is the right length for a tie?

What is the right length for a tie?

I had a meeting yesterday and noticed several guys in the office with their ties finished to different lengths. One person’s tie finished 3cm below the bottom of his belt buckle, and another’s finished a good 5cm above his.

Tell me, where is the right spot for a tie to finish? As a chic who wears a tie on occasion I’m not sure what the etiquette is.

Where do you think a tie should reach to?

According to my boyfriend who wears one everyday and is generally a sharp dresser, it shoudd end exactly at the belt (when the man stands up, of course). I'm not sure this is a "rule", but it does seem to make sense-much shorter or longer than that starts looking a bit clownish.

Alexandra, thanks for that. It was kind of what I though, but I'm surprised these guys didn't know it.

I formerly worked in menswear and can confirm alexandra's comment. I suppose it's easier said than done, though.

Rebecca, I think it's like all details. You should take care until you get it right. The one tie I own I leave knotted and just slip it off over my head, that way it's always right ^_^ Is this a no-no?

My husband wears a tie everyday and he believes a tie should end at belt level as well.

I don't see why it would be. And if I was a man whose image depended on it, believe me, I'd get it right!

Rebecca, fair call. I agree with you.
