Don't show your seams, it's unseemly

I have this thing about unfinished garments, deconstructionist I think it’s called. I have to say, I just can’t come at it. When I see someone wearing a skirt with distressed hems or a jacket with exposed seams I have this sudden urge to rip what ever it is off their back and finish it off properly. I can’t buy anything either that has unfinished anything, even if I know it isn’t going to fall apart before I chuck it out, I still can’t do it, I just can’t.

I think this attitude was instilled in me from birth by my mum; why should I pay good money for something that is poorly made (even if it is not, it just looks that way). Just the though of buying a distressed jacket makes me feel uncomfortable. I get the same feeling if I think about not putting rubbish in a rubbish bin or not wearing a seatbelt. She had me trained well.

What do you think about distressed/deconstructed clothes? Love them or hate them, or have this weird emotional response when thinking about them; let me know.

I like them, but only if they are well made, and intentional. And not your entire outfit: a bit of intentional unfinished business can look very interesting as part of an outfit. But I think you need to wear neat, low key clothes with such a piece.

I think I'm with you... I don't think I could wear them. Not that I mind others wearing them. They kind of look hip hop and happnin on some folk.

Just not me.

I don't like them in general because they have a way of looking sloppy and messy, particularly when worn with other similar items.
However, I did recently fall in a love with a green, silk cocktail dress that had an unfinished hem. The dress would have been too formal and stuffy otherwise, but the unfinished hem made it very young, and hip. Loved it. Unfortunately, my size was not available or I might have been tempted.

I'm a very symmetrical, clean lines person and dislike anything messy or unfinished. I have curly hair and I straighten that as much as possible depending on the weather. The Distressed look also makes me uncomfortable.

Delamare, if I was going to wear distressed items (^_^) I'd agree with your philosophy.

Cellobella, I think Lee Lin Chin on SBS pulls them off well, but just not me either.

Alexandra, the skirt sounds lovely! Perhaps you could distress a similar skirt in your size.

Madam2Bar, "a clean lines person" yep, that discribes me too.

I actually love them, if they're well made and intentional as well. I can imagine a khaki green canvas blazer with deconstructed wrists, and front, with some awesome graffiti across the back, some rockin' light silver chains in a splay across the back... Oh yea.

But in general? Like in jean skirts, or jeans, or whatever else? Nope. Can't do it. My body refuses to wear sweats in public - it can't take the frays.

FabBroke, your jacket sounds totally cool, but I just couldn't wear it. I blame my mother ^_^

It depends. I have a white cotton jacket with frayed edges like I really like, but it's done very nicely and definitely looks like it was done on purpose. I'm not big into holey jeans, though. There are some exceptions. Must be in moderation and look like it was done on purpose (or was a very fortunate accident).

Meg, on purpose is the way to go, but even so it's still not me.
