I love handbags and luggage of all kinds. I admit it; I have a bit of a fetish for them. But I have to say I can’t conceive of spending thousands of dollars on a piece of leather (or worse, a peice of fabric) to hang off my arm and to carry my train ticket and book in.
The new trend of designer bags just seems … stupid. An article in the Sydney Morning Herald talks about a new handbag from Couch that will cost US$10000. For that price I could go on an overseas holiday, or buy a cheap car. Incredible (-ly stupid).
I understand the obsession that begins with owning something exclusive, something that very few other people in the world own, but surely paying more than a plane ticket to an overseas country seems excessive?
The funny thing is, even if I had scads of cash, I still don’t think I could bring myself to buy one of these “designer” bags. I think I’d find a leather worker and have them make me something unique that I designed myself.
Do you love designer bags? And would you really pay all that money for one?

I'm not a bag person at all--I'll find a cute one that fits all my stuff and carry it until it falls apart. (My current bag is a yellow hobo-style with turquiose and brown 'birds on a wire' design.)
I do, however, love shoes.
Hey Jen, I am a bag person, but I do much the same as you anyway. I just can't come at spending stupid amounts of money on a bag.
I too am a shoe person though ^_^
I think they're cute.. but every time I look at the price tag, I choke a little inside...
There are some bags that cost $10,000 USD out there! It's ridiculous, it's just a bag. And most of the population can't even recognize the real from the fake duplicate bags. And to be honest, some knockoff bags are so similar, and made with good leather as well, that you just assume it cost more than $50 or $100. There's no need to spend a thousand times that amount just so you can impress a couple of people.
I am a bag afficionado, but I'm afraid my fantasy red patent Miu Miu satchel is well out of my price range.
So I choose well made leather bags, but I won't carry a knock-off.
I guess at some point, people are so rich that they really need something to spend their money on. For those people, I say why not (though hopefully they are also donating some charity). In the end, it does help someone else get rich that hopefully has some talent.
I adore bags, but would never spend that much on one.
I find leather bags really hard to choose because they must be harder to design and look interesting (which is why I tend to buy more fabric ones), so when I see a leather one I really love,I tend to obsess over it. Luckily, I've just seen one that I really really like, but it's under $300 - about as much as I'd ever spend on one.
Good entry, Icy. It got me thinking... I've quoted you...
FabBroke, looking at price tags, especially for designer bags, makes me choke too.
Wendy, I don't do knock offs either, but post a link to your Miu Miu satchel so we can drool.
Meg, I would normally agree with you, talent should be rewarded, but most of the desinger bags I've seen just look a bit...messy (at least to my eyes).
Delamare, $300 is my complete upper limit too, and it is only be for the bag of my dreams, this one in fact http://individualchic.blogspot.com/2007/04/my-bag-arrived.html
Miss Janey, thanks for the link!
I'm such a bag person--and recently, I've gotten interested in Coach and Dooney & Bourke, but only at a deep discount. I try to avoid looking at any of the really high-end stuff, because I feel a twinge of sadness knowing I can't afford it....
Hey Lisa, deep discount shopping is the way to go absolutely. Do you have any recomendations about your best places?
I would never ever buy a bag that cost over 50 dollars. I like to hang on to my money and I find it wasteful to buy outrageously priced stuff. I buy whatever purse I like even if it is not a trend. (I get compliments on it anyway)
I focus on color and practicality.
Anon, for me individuality is the way to go to. I don't go with trends, I go with what I like. I still would love to have a hand crafted leather bag though.
i'm really into desginer bags right now. at first, i wasn't into them because as a poor graduate student i 1) always carried a backpack and 2) didn't have the funds to buy a $800 purse. but now that i graduated and started working (and i live in LA!) i have definitely gotten into the designer bag craze. my most expensive bag is a Louis Vuitton patent leather bag for $1,450. My 2nd most expensive is another LV patent bag for $870. Yes, it may seem crazy to spend that much, but I do use my bags *a lot*, and they last very well. Plus, I think they're gorgeous! :)
Hey Anita, thanks for stopping by! Eep, $1400 for a purse! However I can see living in LA that it could almost make sense. It probably depends on what you do for a living as well. If image is important to your career then a bag like that could be a good investment. Perhaps you could claim them on tax ^_^
