What makes a good ballet flat?

Flat shoes are practical; you can wear them just about anywhere, and still be able to walk in the morning, they look cute, and you can wear them in most weathers, but not all of them are made equal. Take a look at the flats below.

The first pair are cheapest version, satin, no sole and no arch support. They look ok, especially if you have skinny legs. However, if you have calves they don’t offer enough visual weighting and only make your calves look bigger (however they are still better than thongs or crocs).

The second pair are a proper pair of shoes. Notice they have a small heel (only a cm or two) and internal arch support. The leather detail on the nose also adds visual interest. Now these are a comfortable pair of shoes and the heel and shaped foot offers a better visual balance.

The red pair has the same affect with the small heel and the detail on the toe.

The final pair has a very flat heel but get their definition from the distinct with the slight upward curve. Because they are skin coloured, they serve a different affect to the other shoes. Being the same colour they create an elongated leg.

Great post. I love my ballet flats. They are a great alternative to crocs and flip flops when it comes to comfy shoes. Personally, I like them better than pointy -toed flats - at least on me.

Icy said...

Hey Meg, I have one pair of pointy flats which do work, but I really prefer the ballet ones, can you tell ^_^

Great post, I think I need the ones with a small heel because when I walk too far in my cheaper flat pair my arch starts aching so I toss on heels instead. crazy I know but I have high arches.

Very instructive post!

I have the hardest time getting flats to fit. For me, it's just a different kind of pain than heels - having to do with blisters on the heel. I need to keep shopping. :)

Those red pair are to die for. Agreed that they have to have some structure, some detail, to really work, tho.

Icy said...

GC_CL, I have fairly high arches too and I find the small heel great.

Rebecca, I ALWAYS get blisters too. I've only ever bough 2 pairs of shoes that didn't give me issues. I just bandaid up and wait till I wear them in.

Ambika, I just couldn't resist when I saw the red ones, even though I didn't need another pair of shoes ^_^

Those red shoes are fabulous! What brand?! I MUST HAVE THEM!!

Icy said...

Hey Anon3, I bought them from Mollini (an Australian company I think) 8 or 9 months ago. Good luck finding them ^_^

Ballet flats for men is a great idea. I have high insteps and wearing a shoe with nothing across the instep would be much more comfortable.

Icy said...

Hey Brenn, what a fab idea. That would look great!

stuart said...

i love ballets but as a man its a big NO No sadly

Icy said...

Stuart, is that a no to you wearing ballet flats, or to woment wearing them? ^_^

Icy said...

Oh and Stuart, I'm a huge Fallout 3 fan as well.

I think it´s okay for a guy to wear ballet flats for example a brown round toe one without bow. And if the guy wears the cute one at home, who cares..?

Icy said...

Anon, I agree, flats without frills are the way to go for the guys outside, and inside...you're right, bows are beautiful ^_^

Im a 24 year old male who wears ballet flats every day. I have one pair of mens shoes and those are tennis shoes for exercise only. The ballet flats I wear arent the neutral ones with no bows etc...i wear the ones like the top two pics up there. Ive had a handful of stupid people approach me, but for the most part (90%) People, especially women have been very accepting of it.

Icy said...

Hey Ron (and any other guys reading this post), I'm curious. Where do you source your ballet flats from? Do you get them from eveyday shoe stores, or online, or specialist stores? Do you have trouble finding shoes that fit? Just wondering.

Oh, and thanks for visiting.

I think a ballet flat for men would be a fine idea. Very comfortable

I like to wear regular black ballet slippers as a house shoe or occasionally out shopping or to a restaurant. I like the feeling of being almost barefoot.

I have doing this for a while now and no one has commented on them and I don't think anyone has even noticed them. My wife will occasionally say if we are going out, "why don't you just wear your ballet shoes."

Anonymous said...

Yes! Ballet flats look better with jeans. And even for the guys, at home it´s okay with the bows, isn´t it?

This one is for ICY...I'm a guy who loves to wear ballet flats and there not as hard as people think they are to find. I wear a size 12 to 11 and actually most store do carry those sizes specially Payless they actually go up to size 12 and rarely higher and there always at a bargain I love Payless there shoes are great and they always have a large selection.

Icy @ Individual Chic said...

Hey Joe, thanks for the great advice abou where to get flats for men. Even though Payless Shoes goes to a size 12, do you find they're wide enough for you?

I think the ballet flats could be made also for made, what men worn a few centuries ago?
Do anyone know shoes named Jarmilky?
This time are the ballet flats on men as curiosity but they could virally spread.

If more men tried ballet flats I really think they would find them comfortable. I wear the "sporty" styles like you can get from Skechers, Lands End and L.L. Bean all the time.

I've been wearing flats for a while, and I love them more than normal "guy" shoes. I've been getting a lot of Tory Burch revas lately (thanks to eBay), and they're absolutely amazing! Too bad I don't have the guts to wear them outside, except sometimes at night when people won't notice, if I'm going for a walk. But I wear them nonstop when I'm inside

christopher said...

i actually prefer wearing ballet flats to trainers as they are more comfortable, i even wear them outside. men should at least wear them for a day or two to feel the comfort from wearing them.

Brian Davis said...

Although it has been a great year for me and buying and wearing ballet flats, at my end of the world Fall is in the air and it will soon be boot season. I feel though I have enlightened lots of people about men that wear ballet flats. Ones like these http://www.flickr.com/photos/39715038@N00/5033173344/ (66)
Or these http://www.flickr.com/photos/39715038@N00/4914434972/ (161)

But boot season can be fun as well

As a professional ballet dancer, I have been wearing ballet flats everywhere since 11. I just put crazy glue on the stitchings on the soles.
With wanting to stand out, I always wear light colour leggings with my satin pink ribboned spilt sole Freeds or Capezio slippers. The ABT ballet shoes from pay less are nice too, it you can get 2 for 1 deals.
I am lucky enough to wear US women's size 7!
You can check out my ballet slippers at flickr, mu handle is cicidancer

I am male also. I wear square toe ballet flats year around barefooted even if it cold out. I wear them barefooted for style and comfort. My wife requests that wear them when I go out with her.
