I really admire women who don't carry a handbag, there is something really sexy about it. I saw a woman in a suit in the city the other day who got out of a taxi and the only thing she was carrying was a mobile phone. So cool.
I can't do it, there is still a certain minimum I need: purse, phone, keys, lipstick, bandaids, paracetamol, USB key, pen, and most importantly, a book. If I drop the book, I can fit into a really tiny bag which I still think looks great, but I'll never achieve that really clean look of no bag at all.
Do you need a handbag and what do you put in it?

I neeeed a handbag at all times. I agree though, I wish I could go without one. Especially when I'm out taking photos, because a purse gets in the way. I need at all times, my keys, my wallet, my chapstick, my cell phone, pen, paper and lots more if the bag is big enough. My friends always tease me because my purse weighs so much.
I'd be lost without my bag. It's a big bag too--it has to be to fit all my daily crap in it!
Said list of crap includes (typing as I look)--ipod, Holga camera, fuji f20 camera, lunch, pens, deodorant, spare t-shirt, ibuprofen, cds, a plastic bag from the liquor store and old subway transfer stubs.
Hey Joodie and Corrigan, adding a camera to the mix really increases the room you need! My beloved Panasonic DMZ7 takes about a third of my larger, practical handbag. If I add water and a book it weighs a tonne (especially while travelling overseas when you need a log more crap).
I have a friend I shop with occasionally who does it, she just carries her credit card(s) in her back pocket. But I'd be in all kinds of trouble if I tried to put my sunglasses back there. lol
Actually, I've been finding recently that my eyes are not so bad that I can't do fine without my glasses. The real reason it might not be pretty to go out empty-handed only occurs a few days out of the month.
Maybe when I'm post-menopausal.
I absolutely definitely need a handbag, even when I'm just going down to the local shops to buy bread. I usually carry my purse, card wallet, keys, phone, tiny perfume, rescue remedy, lip balm, tissues, umbrella, ipod, digital camera, my little moleskine cahier for scribbling notes, a pen, my diary and a 600ml water bottle. In summer I carry sunnies in a hard case and in winter I carry gloves, a beanie and a scarf. I have quite a small handbag but because it's soft vinyl it's sort of stretchy and you can get a lot more into it than you'd first think. I think I need to find a stylish, larger bag.
i usually carry a bag... but there are times when i wanna go out for drinks at night that i try to fit everything into pockets. i put my card, my drivers licence, some cash, some blotting paper and lip gloss in my pockets. then i just hold onto my phone and i'm off. but yeah i wish i could do that everyday!
My husband has now gotten on to me for carrying small tote bags. It started out innocently. We were doing a bit more traveling than usual. I'd put my purse in the tote, or leave the tote in the car. Then I found my $1 white Nieman Marcus tote at Goodwill and it matched my summer outfits so well.
Here's what I've started carrying in the totes: cellphone, pda, wallet, other wallet with coupons and gift cards, emergency kit with hair pins and bandaids, hair band, pills in a contacts lens case, contacts lens case, glasses, sunglasses, water bottle, keys, several lip glosses, powder compact, digital camera, fold up brush, pick/comb combo, and occasionally a small umbrella and/or book.
Today I brought an electric razor in my tote because I never see where I missed the hair on my knees until I'm out in the car. I've even brought a spare pair of shoes. I think I need an intervention before I just give up and carry a grandma purse.
When I carry just a purse I try to limit it to the phone, wallet, a lip gloss, and keys and leave the rest in the car - often in a tote bag.
Fortunately, today I bought a small (but not tiny) white purse for less than $10 to replace the white tote.
It's kind of freaky just how much stuff we carry around. I've never carried a shirt, but I do carry heels to wear at work which means a larger bag.
Lucky the fashion at the moment is for big bags!
Meg! I thought I was the only one that somehow can't manage to get the knees smooth enough for daylight!
LOL
I have been considering an electric razor for that very reason.
