Individual Chic: Fishnets and short skirts

Fishnets and short skirts

Fishnet stockings seem to be acceptable day wear these days; I even have a pair myself in a subtle brown, but there are certain limitations on how you wear them. I see women wearing them with lovely black pencil skirts, cut to the knee, and a killer pair of heels, and I think “wow, what a great look”. I see women wearing them with lovely black pencil skirts, cut to the thigh, and a killer pair of heels and I think, “err, that’s a bit trashy”.

Wear your fishnets, but don’t wear them with short skirts, please.

AGREED!

Nude fishnets are quite cute too..

V. respectable with a pencil skirt, and not too high heels, and a more subtle top.. :)

I have yet to muster up the courage to buy a pair.

I love nude fishnet stockings (Wolford does great ones) with a pencil skirt and very high heels. I've also worn black ones for evening with a knee-length black skirt or a conservative LBD. I think the size of the holes can make the look more tasteful: the smaller the holes, the better.

fishnets definitely can add interesting detail to an outfit! Your thoughts on whether they're acceptable law firm office-wear?

I think the rule is knee length or longer skirts, and Valet's advice about the size of the holes is important.

Oooh gosh, Joanna, that's hard. It would really come down to how much you want to stand out, and whether standing out is a good thing. Nude fishnets would be good, or there are some tights around at the moment with finer, more complicated patterns than fishnets. Another alternative might be fishnet knee-highs with long pants.

That way you signal your intention towards fishnets without going too far. If you do go for it, the rest of your outfit should be very modest, pencil skirt is good, and perhaps a polo necked shirt in the same colour?

The smaller the netting the better. I also like them with a slim (not tight) skirt, worn with long boots. Fishnet stocking-socks are also great with t-bar heels worn with wool pants (Target does good ones which last for ages).

great advice icy! thank you!
i think i will do just that, pair them with modest clothes. Going to firm tour in a week and a half and will sport them then.

Delamare, Great suggestion with long boots and a skirt, might have to try that myself ^_^.

Joanna, glad everyone's suggestions could help, but what's a firm tour?

I personally am of the opinion that another way to make black fishnets slightly more subtle is to wear them over opaque black tights. It means you can add the texture (and even some of the daring) of fishnets, but it shows less skin, making the look less trashy.

Hey Anon, now that's a cool idea. Love it!

I know this is a bit old .. but I am wearing a pencil skirt with stockings this weekend. I am doing a burlsque/pin up girl look. Everyone thinks I'm nutt for daring to try the look but reading this just confirmed that even if I am nutts the look will be ok and it won't be too much. I can't wait now!!!!!!

Nadia,

You're look sounds awesome. Keep in mind the other great accessory for fishnets is confidence ^_^ Don't be self conscious about them and you'll look great.
