Individual Chic: Cheerleaders

Cheerleaders

I mean, yes, cheerleaders* have to wear skimpy outfits usually comprising of short-shorts, and a tank top in their teams colours. Hey I get it, a lot of red-blooded (yobbo) Aussie males are watching as they jump around waving their team onto the field.

What I don’t get though are the tall white hooker boots they seem to have to wear. It’s odd, how can they dance in those? And they always seem to be white as well, even when there is no white anywhere in the rest of their uniform.

And you know what, it looks even odder when they are lined up in the foyer of the Hilton Hotel in the centre of Sydney. Very out of place.

* Cheerleaders in Australia do not have the sweet and innocent connotations they do in the US. They are scantily clad professional dancers who perform before major Rugby League or AFL matches. Let it be know though, I don’t like either sport.

Oh, don't be fooled. It sounds like the cheerleaders there are just like the ones here in the U.S. While I have nothing against cheerleaders or cheer-leading personally, I've seen way to many performances and uniforms that were definitely too risqué. At the professional level, I half-way understand it. However, some of the school-sanctioned stuff I have seen done by teens and pre-teens at school games is downright indecent. It's really sad because the cheerleaders do tend to be the girls that other girls at school look up to. That kind of over-sexualization is not a good message.

As for the boots, I do think that they are specially made (well, at least some may be) for dancers. We have them here, too, although my high school's cheerleaders just wore sneakers I think.

There is no tradition of cheerleading at highschool, or even University here in Australia. We only have cheerleaders for major national sporting competitions. As such, all these women are at least 18 so it's up to them as to how sexual they look, but I agree totaly that it isn't a look for teens and pre-teens.

As a NRL fan I find it quite funny that this season - most teams have tried to make their cheergirls look more like dancing - wearing those black dance flat shoes (sneaker like).

Karina, oh thank goodness, black dance shoes are so much more sensible. Me in my non-sporting self didn't recognise their uniform (or their cut down skimpy version of the uniform) but it had an air of AFL about it. Not sure why they were in Sydney (as I'm sure even I would recognise the Swans). ^_^

Meg, agreed! Cheerleaders here are just as bad in Canada....

At least they haven't sunk to the depraved levels of the Pussycat Dolls ....yet.

Hey thanks Anon for dropping by. I didn't realise the boots were constructed differently, but I can see that would be very useful for dancing in. Do they have to look so ... trashy ... though ^_^ ?
