I succumbed, skinny jeans

I swore to myself I wouldn’t fall for the trend of the skinny jeans, I was sure they just weren’t going to look any good, I have thighs after all. But after buying my new shoes, I realised that the bootleg jeans I was wearing weren’t working with them. Skinny jeans might be the answer instead.

I took myself down to Target (‘cause I didn’t want to spend that much on them) and tried on several pairs. I bought a black pair (more black clothes, fancy that) for AU$40 that I’m pleased with.
If you’ve got curves and thighs and you want to wear skinny jeans, here are my tips.
  • Get a pair that covers your butt. Very important and it should go for all jeans, skirts, pants, well anything really. Don’t go low.
  • Get a dark colour. Much more flattering than a light colour for big thighs.
No muffin tops. Very important and see point 1.
  • Make sure the jeans are actually skinny and not just straight. They should hug your leg, especially the top part, not just skim it. A straight style will only look a bit dated; instead go for a bootleg or wide legged jeans.
  • If you’re not tall, wear chunky or heeled shoes. These will balance your hips out; bootleg jeans would normally take care of this for you.
  • Look in the mirror before you buy them. Ask yourself honestly, do they really suit you? If the answer is no, don’t buy them or try on a different style. Don’t be a slave to fashion, be a style master.
You can see what I mean about the shoes from the pictures below. I’m wearing wedges, heels and flats with skinny jeans here. I look good, good and not as good.

Here I am again in bootlegged jeans wedges, heels and flats. This time it’s the wedges which aren’t working but the other two are fine.

I succumbed but made my own by sewing from the knee down on some old stretchy boot cut jeans. I only wear them with boots, though, so I guess it doesn't really count. I am not ready to full fledge commit but I think your style guide is great!

Outstanding post!

Great illustration of your points, too. Which makes me wonder, why is everybody so excited about skinnies with flats?

CG_CL, What a great idea! I have some old blue jeans I was going to give away, but I might try that instead.

Rebecca, Yeah, I'm not sure about the skinnies and flats either. It looks OK if you are very tall, or have legs like twigs (or both) but doesn't really work for others. The other alternative is a pair of boots over the jeans, that way you give emphasis to the ankles and feet as well.

Super post. Its all about the fit.

I think skinnies & flats work depending on the flats. Pointed toes help. Mine look great with a pair of red patent peep toe wedges -- the wedges are less than an inch. But they look equally good with strappy sandals & pumps. The real bonus is they don't have to be hemmed to a particular length.

Wendy, ooh red patent wedges with skinny jeans, love it!

Hmm. I like (or thought I did) skinny jeans with flats. Not that I have skinny jeans, lol. I'm afraid of them b/c I have wide hips but thin thighs and calves. So bootleg is a great look for me.

Hey DCRMom, I'm not saying don't do flats and skinny jeans, only that people should look in the mirror and really work out if it suits them. If I'd worn bright coloured flats instead of black I think it would have worked against my hips better. I'll try that next time ^_^

No matter what shoes I wear, skinny jeans make me look like Hiphip Mcsaddlebags. But that could be because I always, always wear flat shoes.

Ah well Gauri, of course you know yourself. If they don't work for you, they don't work ^_^

I posted on this not long ago as well - there were two camps within my readers. Those who love the skinny and those who detest the skinny.

I am certainly no stick thin Kate Moss but I LOVE the skinny. I tried so many different pairs though until I decided on the ones which didn't make me look like a fat cow :-)

I love rocking the skinnies with heels most of the time. If I wear them with ballet pumps I contrast with a looser, longer top which covers part of my less than perfect bum.

I know what you mean about the whole boot leg thing not looking quite right anymore. I did what Country Girl did too - took my three worst offending boot leg jeans to an alteration shop and had them make them into straight legs. It worked a treat and now they look fab again with all the seasons new look in shoes.

I really love your blog!

Fiwibabe, I've done the thing with the longer top as well, and I've been please with how good it looks. You get the tights effect without having too little, err shall we call it, "support". Heels or tunics seems to be the way to go...

I stumbled across this website and noticed that someone mentioned that skinny jeans only look good on taller people who are thin and I would just like to point out that that is not true. Im a teenager and very short ( 4 foot 9 :D ) and they look very nice on me. I also do really like them with flats and I just bought a pair of mettallic gold flats to go with them online today.I purchased a few pairs from stores and since im small they dont hug my legs as I would like them to, so I am going to sew them and hem them and all that jazz. My favorite pair of skinny jeans are actually the pair that I made out of old flare jeans. Ive gone out in them multiple times and no one even knows that I didnt buy them like that. I love skinny jeans with a babydoll top and I like wearing them with flipflops too.

Hey Kim, sounds like a great look with the metallic flats. Great idea converting the flared jeans to skinnies, nothing wrong with creating your own looks (and it' soo much cheaper too).
