Unlike the Fug Girls from Go Fug Yourself, I say dresses over pants can be done, but you just have to do it carefully. Like all things, you should look at the finished look and decide if it really does work.
There are a just two simple rules to make it work:
Match the colours. Try to link in a colour from the dress to the pants. Bright colours in the dress, plus another bright colour in the pants really doesn’t work. I’ve used black pants with dresses with a black based pattern and it works. Don’t do a Laura Dern or a Heather Graham.
Don’t use long dresses. The dress should be no longer than the knees. You should really be wearing the dress as a long tunic. Too long and the pants are pointless (though some people may say that anyway). For me, only one of these dresses is long enough to wear on its own so matching it with pants gives me more flexibility.
See, it’s not hard, you can do it, just do it carefully.

I just found your blog, I love it! You have all the things I think of and never bother to do! I am now all inspired! (also I didn't think there would be any other IT System Administrators who play computer games, read sci-fi and fantasy, and sew, I do however, hate cooking!)
Thanks for your lovely comments Louise! Nice to see another techie chick breaking the sterotypes ^_^
this is too cute!
My daughter does this all the time.. I'm a little "chunkier" and so worry if it will look ok on me :-)
Thanks for the comment Sallie. I too am chunkie, but I think anyone can wear this look. You just have to make sure the combination is working for you. I think skinny bootleg pants or jeans probably work best as well, especially if you have larger hips (like me).
I love love love the dress/tunic over pants look. I think you look fabulous in all those looks!! I have been doing that look for years and it flatters my shape and looks interesting! I like cute fun aprons over pants with t-shirts too. Want to exchange blog links with me?? Email me and let me know!
I'd love to link to your site Elleabelle and you make beautiful jewelry.
Honey, you can REALLY pull off dresses over pants, you look awesome.
Hey thanks Gauri!
Whoever said that skinny girls can pull anything off was wrong! It takes good fashion knowledge, like the kind you have. I love your blog!
... Wanna be designer and college student, not studying fashion :(
Thank you for all of the advice on here!
Hey Anon, thanks for the lovely compliments ^_^.
