Canberra, a public service city, and it shows

I was in Canberra, Australia’s capital city, on the Australia day long weekend. I did some shopping, went to the Gallery and generally wandered around the city while P did other things. What I really noticed though, was the lack of dressiness, literally.

In Sydney, lots of women are wearing dresses, usually lovely summery things that are cool and look pretty, but noooo, not in Canberra. Everyone was wearing such staid clothes, usually three-quarter length pants, t-shirts and sandals, even in the middle of the central, dressy mall. It was weird.

The National Art Gallery was the same, all the guys were wearing shorts, collared t-shirts and closed shoes (P blended in perfectly ^_^). Maybe a memo that went out about an after-hours uniform to all residents of Canberra? After all, it is a government town and the heart of the Australian public service. Nice to see they’re so diligent to take the office policies home with them.

You probably wouldn't believe what people where in the local mall, here. Flip flops, gym shorts that ride up the butt (and usually with some stupid saying across the butt), topped off by a too-tight, belly-showing t-shirt with some equally inane saying.

That's almost standard attire in the mall, on the streets, wherever. Hence my overdressing backlash ; )
